"Dance is what happens between the beat"

Since 2005

Thank you, Ted! It meant a lot to us that you and JoAnn were able to come and do your thing. Your presence in the house is always appreciated! You had more folks at the party up there giving it a shot than I expected.

Ted and Joanne gave a great dance lesson at Ashkenaz in Berkeley. He gives nice simple instructions, throws in a little humor and a lot of fun! I’m so happy you to see you on the rotation of instructors at Ashkenaz.

said on Jul 7, 2017 7:32 PM

Ted Just wanted to let you know that I went to Ashkenaz on the 4th of July and danced all night! I used all the steps you taught me. Lots of fun. Thanks so much.

I had a wonderful private lesson with Ted today. He gave me a great introduction to the basics of Zydeco. Ted's sense of humor, expertise, and encouragement made it a successful and very fun experience! Thank you, Ted. Linda

Took both lessons from Jo Ann and Ted at the Cajun & Blues Festival and that was enough to get started. What a hoot! Thanks Ted.

Ted and JoAnn gave a great zydeco lesson at the Bryte VFW Zydeco dance party last Sunday. While my wife and I do other kinds of dancing regularly, we were rusty on our zydeco. No other couples were on the dance floor for the first 15 minutes, so we got a private crash-course that quickly had us up to speed on the basic steps. Then we got some very helpful tips on styling and variations on the basic steps. When newbies joined the lesson Ted and JoAnn were able to get everyone dancing and having fun. Well done! There may be a private lesson in our future...

Bill Resneck said on May 12, 2015 10:21 AM

I have seen Ted dance for a long time as a member of the zydeco community here in northern California. Not only is he a patient and skilled teacher, but more importantly he conveys the joy that dancing brings. Keep up the good work.

Ted, Had such a fun time at the Modesto Eagles last night with you and Tony. Thank you so much for the dance lessons and the dances throughout the evening. I had not danced zydeco steps before and with your help we were all dancing and having so much fun. You made it easy to learn and be comfortable as a beginner. You had the place hopping last night and hope to find you again at another zydeco dance.I have a new favorite besides east coast swing. Thanks again Ted. .

Dear Ted, I've written this recommendation of your work to share with other LinkedIn users. Details of the Recommendation: "I've been at several events where Ted has lead dance instructions prior to a bands performance, and one event where he not only provided dance instruction, but also DJ'd the music for the entire night. He is the nicest guy and does his best to make sure everybody has a good time. I would highly recommend Ted for either his dance instruction or DJ services."

Jim Clabaugh said on Oct 25, 2013 10:54 PM

Dear Ted, I've written this recommendation of your work to share with other LinkedIn users. Details of the Recommendation: "There's a reason I'm behind the camera, I can't dance, love music just can't dance a step. But I have seen Ted teach a few dance classes and in less than 1/2 hour, he had these folks steppin! Ted makes it look so easy that even a ol' codger like me mite work up the courage to give it a try. Hope you do the same."

Jill Lloyd said on Sep 30, 2013 9:34 PM

The comments above reflect my sentiments as well re Ted. We hired him for the Big Squeeze/OC Accordion Festival to teach zydeco dance lessons. We were impressed right from the start. A show organizer always loves a performer who shows up plenty early to check out the lay of the land, meet with the sound staff and be ready. Ted did all that, and was so pleasant to work with. Our sound and stage crew rarely comment about things like this, but they all reported to me about how great Ted was to work with. And he gave lessons that were easy for dancers of all levels, including beginners, to follow. He was patient, fun and got people on their feet. His assistant Joann was also a wonderful addition. Brought along Mardi Gras beads for the dancers too! Always a nice touch. We will definitely be hiring Ted again for future events, as well as refer others to him as well. THANKS TED!

She wasn't the only one, two ladies I was helping out were so happy at the end of the nite for the lessons and for me showing them how to apply the steps...They wanted to learn more but the nite had ended... Cowboy, you bring joy to peoples lives every time you teach..

Ted, As always, your dance lesson prior to the Eagles' club dance, was great fun. I spoke with several participants who said they'd never been to a Zydeco event before; to a person, they were pleased to have learned a level of comfort with the dance. Your relaxed, yet detailed methods are the reason. Yep, you have the ability to guide folks to having tons of fun in an unexpected way. Thanks for all you do to expand the joy of Zydeco.

Debra said on Jun 30, 2013 12:13 PM

You brought joy to my dancing feet..If there is such a feeling of too much fun that would be how I felt in Modesto with my lesson from Ted

Denyse Miller said on Jun 30, 2013 12:10 PM

Ted had the dance floor filled at the Modesto Eagles Hall tonight. Ted brings the Zydeco music listeners to their feet even when they've never heard or danced to it. A lot of fun (Ted can be a bit of a comedian at times but that's part of the fun), he takes it slow for those that are new to Zydeco, and he adds a little spice to his dance instruction for those that are a little more developed in their dance skills (and those Zydeco folks LOVE their spice). :-) Thanks again for the dances, Ted. Always a pleasure.

Ted, I came to your dance lesson this week at Tio Lio's. I've been dancing zydeco for a little over 2 years now, and have had lessons with various instructors. You are terrific! I noticed that often the new people might know the steps but they are off the beat. I liked the way you began the lesson with feeling the beat first. Then you kept it simple with just a back and forth "1, 2, 3, 4 (easier for people to get than slow quick quick slow). Finally you really zoned in on individuals who might need help by having couples dance one at a time, vs. the whole group. Kudos to you!

Greg Benusa said on Nov 2, 2011 8:58 AM

Ted is a natural teacher with great perspecitives and understanding of the dance and music. I always loved learning from different instructors when I was learning Zydeco and I still do enjoy it years later as I always learn something new!!

I caught on to Zydaco at a festival but kept missin a beat. Ted and Joann came to Sacramento for a two hour class and I joined in. It was so helpful and so much fun I decided to jump on a plane to Laffette and stay at the blue moon where Cetric Watson played that nite! I just about out danced some of the better dancers! Next nite Geno played at some big cowboy bar. I think I went straight up for about three hours. I tell ya. Once Ted gave me a little coaching on the additude of the dance, how to feel the music and a few basic steps I wa.s on my way. SACRAMENTO...YOU NEED TO SHOW UP FOR THIS1

One of many dance lessons I've enjoyed with Ted. This was at the Eagle's Hall in Modesto, CA where the Blues Box Bayou Band was playing. Ted always makes it fun, but what I found interesting was that he was able to entice just about everyone out onto the dance floor for the dance lesson. The dance floor was completely full, he taught the basics of Zydeco as a couples dance and he also taught a Zydeco line dance giving everyone a chance to dance. Ted and JoAnn gave a great demonstration of Zydeco dancing before the lesson which I believe demonstrated how fun Zydeco dancing can be. Great job, Ted!!

Hi Ted--do you give private lessons? My boyfriend wants to learn to dance, but is severely challenged in the rhythm department. Actually, I think he's teachable, but not by me. You are the only male teacher who can dance around here, and if he's going to learn, I want him to learn the right way! Please let me know if you are interested, and how much you charge. W.L.
